It was our anniversary, a day I’d been looking forward to for weeks.
Lately, Jason had seemed strangely distant, absorbed by work. I wanted to believe it was just the weight of the new project he was immersed in, nothing more.
I’d prepared an intimate dinner at home: candles flickering on the table, his favorite dish simmering… everything designed to make the evening perfect.
I wanted this evening to encapsulate our love, our present, and our future.
When he arrived, I greeted him with a warm smile, trying to hide the anxiety gnawing at me. Maybe I’d had too high a hope for that evening, maybe I’d held too tightly to the idea that it would be special.
His eyes lit up when he saw me, but there was something different in his expression, a tinge that wasn’t the joy I’d imagined.

„Happy anniversary, Vanessa,” he said softly.
He handed me a small velvet box. My heart leaped. I wasn’t expecting anything ostentatious, just a gesture with real meaning.
I opened the box with trembling fingers and found a delicate necklace: a thin gold chain with a heart-shaped pendant that shimmered faintly.
It was beautiful… until I turned it over.
On the back, precisely engraved, a name: Emily.
I felt the breath escape me.
„Jason… what is this?” I whispered, my voice cracking.
The name was clear, unmistakable. Emily. His ex-wife. The woman he’d heard so much about, but whose weight in his life he’d never fully understood… until that moment.
Jason’s face drained of color. I saw the regret in his eyes, but I also understood that he was beginning to perceive the magnitude of his mistake.
„Vanessa, I…”
„Why is this necklace named after her? Why would you give me something like that?” „I interrupted, disbelief and pain mingling in my voice.
He ran his hand over the back of his neck, uncomfortable.
„I had that necklace made for Emily when we were married… I found it recently and thought…”
„Did you think?” I cut him off, my tone cold. „That this would be acceptable? That it wouldn’t hurt?”
„It didn’t mean anything, just…”
My tears began to fall.
„To you it’ll be ‘just a necklace,’ but to me it’s an open wound. After everything we’ve been through… did you think this wouldn’t break me?”
Jason tried to lean closer, pleading.
„Vanessa, I love you. It was a mistake. I didn’t imagine how much it would affect you.”
„But it does affect me,” I said, feeling the words weigh tons. „You’re not over Emily. You haven’t let go of your past. And I’m… I’m just trying to fit into a story that isn’t completely mine.”
He shook his head, insisting it wasn’t true, but I couldn’t listen anymore.
„I need time,” I finally said, my voice faint.
I left the room with the necklace in my hand, knowing that for him it had been a trivial mistake… and for me, the confirmation of my greatest fear: not being enough.
I wondered if we could ever heal what had just been broken. Because that necklace wasn’t just a forgotten object from the past… it was a reminder that, perhaps, I would never have his whole heart.
