Clara felt as if the cold hospital room was spinning around her. Her eyes fixed on her daughter’s pale, sweaty face as she tried to sort out her increasingly confused thoughts.
The doctor appeared calm, but her gaze betrayed a concern that was difficult to hide.
„Ana, darling, please… tell us exactly what happened Saturday night,” she asked softly, leaning toward the girl.
Ana hesitated. She bit her lip, and tears immediately began to roll down her cheeks.
„I was in a lot of pain… and MartĂn told me not to tell Mom… that she’d only worry. He gave me some pills… very bitter. Afterwards… I don’t remember exactly.”
Clara’s blood ran cold. Pills? Why would MartĂn give medication to a child without telling anyone?
The doctor reacted quickly:
„It’s crucial to know what substances she ingested. I’ve already requested an ambulance; we’ll run all the necessary tests at the hospital. It’s not just indigestion.
Every minute felt like an eternity. Finally, the ambulance arrived, and the blue lights reflecting off the glass windows of the office seemed to cut through the tension in the air.
The paramedics carefully placed Ana on the stretcher and immediately began stabilization maneuvers.
Clara walked down the hospital hallway, holding back tears. One thought tormented her: How had she not realized this before? How could she have left her daughter alone with MartĂn?
During the transfer, the doctor whispered to her:

„The symptoms, along with what we saw on the ultrasound, indicate that Ana’s body was exposed to something she should never have ingested. Her liver and stomach show damage. We’ll have confirmation with the lab results.”
In the waiting room, Clara felt a burning rage rise inside her, mixed with an unbearable feeling of guilt. MartĂn⊠the man she had trusted with her life and her daughter’s. Who was he really? What secrets was he hiding?
The phone vibrated. A message from MartĂn:
„Everything okay? I’m home now. Are you all right?”
Clara clenched her fists. She didn’t answer. Just then, the doctor emerged from the emergency room.
„Ana is stable, but there are serious suspicions. We must inform the authorities. It’s very likely she ingested a toxic substance.”
Those wordsâ”inform the authorities”âhit Clara like a bolt of lightning. She realized the nightmare was just beginning.
She looked up at her daughter, pale and fragile behind the glass window. In that instant, she made an irrevocable decision: MartĂn would never go near Ana again.
Deep in her heart, Clara knew the truth about that weekend would be far darker than she could have ever imagined.
