I was sitting in the kitchen chopping vegetables for dinner when the doorbell rang.

I was in the kitchen chopping vegetables for dinner when the doorbell rang. It was already late, and I wasn’t expecting anyone.

Our evenings at home were always quiet: the kids were already in bed, my husband working late in his office. We rarely had visitors at that hour.

I looked at the clock—it was 8:45 PM. Who could it be?

As I walked toward the door, I tried to calm myself: it was probably the neighbor. Sometimes she came to ask for something small.

But this time was different. An inexplicable uneasiness swept through me, even though I didn’t know why.

I opened the door. A woman stood before me. Pale, with dark, unkempt hair, and a look of confusion and tiredness on her face.

For a moment, I thought I recognized her, but my memory couldn’t recall her name.

„Hi, Tanya,” she said in a familiar voice.

My head spun in shock. It was Olga—my husband’s first wife.

I stood there, unsure how to react. Olga had disappeared from our lives years ago, when her marriage to Igor ended and he met me.

We’d never met, and all I knew about her came from Igor’s stories.

She rarely spoke of her, and I thought the past was long forgotten. But now she was there, on the threshold of the house where she’d once lived with Igor.

„Olga?” I asked, trying to hide my shock.

She nodded and sighed:

„We need to talk. It’s about Igor.”

We sat in the kitchen, while I tried to quell my growing anxiety. Olga didn’t start speaking right away. She was fidgeting nervously with the cup of tea I’d offered her.

A heavy silence fell between us.

„I know you’re probably surprised to see me here,” she said finally, calm but firm. „It’s nothing personal.” I came because you need to know the truth.

I picked up my cup and felt a wave of concern wash over me.

“What are you talking about?” I asked, trying to understand what he meant.

Olga paused, then sighed deeply and said,

“Igor didn’t tell you everything. When we broke up, it wasn’t just that. He did something you need to know.”

His words hit me like a cold wind. What could it mean? I knew Igor as an honest and respectful man. What could he be hiding from me?

“Olga,” I said, trying to remain calm, even though a storm was raging inside. “Tell me clearly what you mean.”

He looked at me, his eyes filled with deep sadness and an exhausted expression.

“He cheated on me,” he said finally. “For a long time. And it wasn’t an isolated mistake. I discovered it too late, when everything was ruined.

And I thought… I thought I should know, if it ever happens again

I stood there, unable to believe what I’d just heard. Igor? Betrayal? Impossible. We’d been together for five years, and I’d never had the slightest suspicion.

How could it be true?

„You’re wrong,” I said, anger rising within me, along with the desire to defend him. „Igor isn’t like that. He’s never given me any reason to doubt him.”

Olga didn’t look away, and her face remained serious.

„I thought so too,” she said softly. „But it happened. And I don’t want you to find yourself in the same situation.”

When Olga left, I was left alone with my thoughts. Her words continued to echo in my mind. What if she was right? What if Igor had really been hiding something from me?

When Igor returned home, I couldn’t hold the silence any longer. I didn’t know how to start the conversation, but I knew I couldn’t keep quiet.

„Have you spoken to Olga?” I asked as soon as he entered.

He paused in the doorway, and for a moment his face showed surprise.

„Olga?” he repeated, taking off his jacket. „No, I haven’t heard from her in years. Why do you ask?”

„She came today,” I said sharply, in a harsh tone. „She said you cheated on me and that I needed to know.”

Igor stopped. His face darkened. That was enough for me to know it was true.

„Is it true?” I asked, trying to remain calm. „Did you really cheat on Olga?”

He sighed deeply and sat down, lowering his gaze.

„Tanya, it happened a long time ago,” he said softly. „I was a different person. Our relationship was already ending. And I… yes, I made a mistake.

I’m not proud of it. But that’s in the past, and it hasn’t happened since.”

„Why didn’t you ever tell me about it?” My voice trembled, but I tried to contain my emotions. „You never gave me any clues.”

„Because it was in the past, Tanya. I didn’t want it to weigh on us. I’ve changed. I’m no longer that man.”

His words made me doubt. Sure, people can change. But how could I be sure that what had happened with Olga wouldn’t happen again?

Months have passed since that day I discovered the truth about Igor. We never spoke about it again, but an invisible wall had formed between us. I could no longer look at him the same way.

I kept wondering what else he might be hiding from me.

But one evening, while I was in the kitchen,

It was Igor who broke the silence.

„I know you don’t trust me anymore,” he said softly, without looking at me. „But I want to make it right.

I’m willing to do anything to regain your trust.”

His words seemed sincere, and something inside me stirred. I didn’t know if I’d ever be able to completely forget his betrayal.

But I realized one thing: if we wanted to save our marriage, we had to work on it together.

Months have passed. Our relationship isn’t the same, but we’ve started to rebuild trust.

We go to couples therapy and are gradually rediscovering the closeness that once united us.

I haven’t forgotten his mistakes, but I’ve realized that everyone deserves a second chance. And I gave it to Igor.

Now I know that a relationship isn’t just about love and support, but also about forgiveness. Yes, the past can’t be changed, but the future can be built.
