A lone cowboy heard an unexpected noise from the barn. When he approached cautiously, he discovered a young woman with two newborns.
„You can’t stay here,” Matías said, holding up a kerosene lamp as he watched her lying in the hay, the babies bundled up beside her. „This is no place for a mother with such young children.”
Elena looked up, her eyes swollen from crying and exhaustion.
„Please… I just need one night. I have nowhere else to go.”
„Where did you come from? How did you end up here, in the middle of a storm?” he asked.
„The car broke down,” she replied, swallowing as she cradled the babies. „I went into labor and didn’t make it to the hospital.”
„I sought shelter… and they were born here,” she finally whispered.
Matías frowned. In five years of living alone on that farm, he had never dealt with anything like this. Lightning illuminated the interior of the barn with intermittent flashes while thunder shook the ground.
„There are two of them,” Elena said tenderly. „Santiago and Esperanza.”
Hearing that name stirred an old ache in Matías: it was the name his wife, Carmen, had chosen for the farm when they dreamed of having a family.
„I can’t leave you here,” he murmured, almost as if speaking to himself. „The house is close. You can stay until the storm passes.”
Elena closed her eyes in relief.
„Thank you… really, thank you.”
Matías helped her to her feet, carrying one of the babies while she held the other. The rain soaked them before they reached the main house. Once inside, Matías lit the fireplace and laid out the sofa with clean blankets.
„Do you want something to eat?”
„I’ll be fine with a glass of water,” she replied.
He watched her as she settled the twins. She was young, perhaps twenty-eight, with a delicate face but a firm gaze. Her clothes, though dirty and damp, revealed a comfortable past.
„What’s your name?”
„Elena. Elena Morales.”
„Matías Sandoval,” she introduced herself. „This is my farm.”

Elena drank as if the water were a treasure.
„Do you live here alone?”
„Yes. Since my wife died in an accident,” he replied, leaving a bitter silence.
„I’m so sorry,” she said softly.
Santiago’s crying broke the stillness, and Matías retreated to the kitchen to give him privacy. From there, he heard her soft voice intoning an unfamiliar lullaby. For the first time in years, the house didn’t seem empty.
When he returned, the babies were sleeping soundly.
„They’re precious,” he commented.
„They’re my whole life,” Elena whispered. „I’d do anything for them.”
„What are you protecting them from?” Matías asked, sensing shadows behind his words.
Elena avoided his gaze.
„It’s a complicated story…”
The conversation ended there. He saw her small travel bag on the doorstep, wet and worn. He picked it up to dry by the fire, but some documents slipped out. As he gathered them, his attention fell on a surname that stopped him in his tracks:
Vidal.
He knew that name well: one of Argentina’s most powerful dynasties. Media, construction, politics… all under their control.
When she returned to the living room, Elena seemed more nervous than before.
„Elena,” she finally said. „Who are you, really?”
She hugged the children to her chest before answering:
„I belong to the Vidal family… but I gave it all up. Running away was the only way to protect my children.”
Matías recalled the recent scandals: disappearances, shady dealings… things the press didn’t report openly.
„Are they looking for you?”
„They have eyes everywhere,” she whispered. „Governments, police, whatever it takes to stay in power. If they know I’m alive, they’ll come for them.”
Matías felt a chill. That woman wasn’t just a mother lost in the storm: she was the epicenter of a dangerous family war.
„Then you can’t stay here,” he said, looking out the window. „Every minute the risk increases.”
„And where will I go?” she asked, with suppressed desperation.
Before he could answer, a distant noise froze them: engines. Several. A caravan moving toward the farm.
„It’s them,” Elena said, pale. „They’ve found us.”
Matías took her arm and they hid in the bushes. The lights were getting closer.
Her heart was beating fast… until she heard another engine, a different one. She recognized the vehicle.
„He’s a friend,” she whispered. „We can trust him.”
The driver, an imposing man, got out of the car and, seeing Matías, said,
„Matías! Just in time. Get in, I’ll take you to safety.”
The journey was tense, but the darkness of the forest protected them. They arrived at an isolated house where the man, involved in the fight against the Vidals, offered them temporary safety.
„It won’t be for long, but no one will find you here,” he warned.
Elena let out a shaky breath. Matías felt hope for the first time amid the chaos.
„You saved us,” he said.
Elena shook her head, tears glistening in her eyes.
„We saved ourselves together, Matí.”
And as long as we do it together, no one will take our children away from us.
The danger hadn’t disappeared, but something had changed:
They were no longer alone in the face of the storm.
