„Don’t worry, darling. Everything will be okay. Mommy’s here,” Eszter whispered, cradling little Benedek in her arms.
The baby had woken up in the middle of the night, crying, and couldn’t calm down.
Eszter had to put all her work aside. Her laptop and documents were scattered across the couch as she sat down and began to softly sing a lullaby.
The first ten minutes made no difference, but then Benedek slowly began to calm down.
Eszter sighed and gently placed him in his crib, kissed his forehead, and closed the door softly so as not to wake him.
„How will I get through all this?” she thought exhausted, heading to the kitchen for a cup of coffee.
„Ah, if only you were here, Ádám… I miss you so much.”
Almost a year earlier…
When doctors told Eszter and her husband Ádám that they would likely never have children, they decided to travel.
Concerts at the Sydney Opera House, quiet beaches in Honolulu, delicious buffets in Las Vegas, and the breathtaking fjords of Bergen.
While preparing for a trip to the Bahamas, Eszter held a positive pregnancy test in her hand. They couldn’t believe it!
Along with Ádám, they felt a miracle had happened, and they joyfully returned to Budapest to celebrate with friends and neighbors.
Both Eszter and Ádám were orphans, raised in foster homes. Eszter took care of the house, while Ádám was the CEO of an appliance company.
They lived happily. They had a beautiful home in a quiet residential neighborhood, enjoyed each other’s company—and they were finally about to become parents.
But that happiness didn’t last long. One tragic evening changed everything.
—”Hello? I’m looking for Eszter Molnár?”
—”Yes, it’s me. Can I help you?”
—”Captain Zoltán Nagy, police. I regretfully have to inform you that your husband, Ádám, died in a tragic car accident on the highway.
We found your number in the victim’s phone. Please come so we can identify the body.”
Eszter was paralyzed. No… it couldn’t be true!
That morning, Ádám had left for a business meeting. Eszter had a bad feeling about something and asked him not to come. He just smiled and reassured her that everything would be fine.
He kissed her goodbye. He promised he’d be back soon.
When Eszter heard the news, she was heartbroken. She was seven months pregnant. The shock was so severe that she went into labor prematurely.
Fortunately, her neighbor, Mrs. Márta Tóth, heard something strange, ran into the apartment, and called an ambulance.
Eszter was taken to the hospital and gave birth to her son. Benedek was born prematurely and admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit.
Present tense…
Since then, Benedek had grown healthy, but lately something had changed. He had become irritable, waking up crying in the middle of the night, and appeared tired during the day.
At first, Eszter sought medical help.
—”Doctor, Benedek is always tired. He doesn’t want to play during the day; he seems exhausted. What’s going on?” she asked worriedly.
—”Don’t worry, Eszter. It’s common in small children. He’s going through a developmental phase. Everything will be fine in a few weeks.”
But things weren’t getting better—in fact, they were getting worse.

One evening, Eszter decided to install a video camera in Benedek’s room to watch him at night.
She sat on the couch and began watching the images on the screen. At first, everything seemed normal. But suddenly…
Something moved on the screen.
Benedek laughed, as if someone—or something—was in the room with him.
Eszter’s heart began to beat faster.
She jumped up and ran into the bedroom.
A shiver ran down her spine. A shadow moved next to the crib.
The door swung open with a bang as Eszter entered.
The shadow next to the crib suddenly shifted and vanished into a corner.
—”Who’s there?!” she shouted, rushing over to the child.
Benedek laughed happily, as if nothing had happened. But Eszter froze, noticing a small, dark figure in the corner, huddled against the wall.
She approached and saw… a shivering, dirty puppy.
The Spirit of the Past
The animal looked scared, dirty, and malnourished. It didn’t growl or bark—it just lay there, silent, as if expecting to be chased away.
But when Eszter realized that the little dog had been with Benedek all that time, a painful memory resurfaced.
—”Dobó…” she whispered, kneeling.
Benedek fussed in the crib, trying to reach the puppy, who cautiously approached Eszter.
Many years ago, Eszter and Ádám had adopted a black-and-white puppy and named him Dobó. They loved him like a member of the family.
But after Ádám’s death, Eszter was too devastated. She had so many responsibilities with the child that she was forced to take Dobó to a shelter.
The dol
Hours was too big. She couldn’t bear to look at the dog that Ádám had loved so much every day.
And now, after almost a year, another puppy had appeared. Small, hungry, and exhausted… But how had he gotten into the house?
The clue to the mystery
Suddenly, Eszter remembered the dog door on the terrace!
The one she’d never closed completely—Dobó always came in and out through it. After the tragedy, Eszter had completely forgotten about it.
And now, after months, a stray puppy had found its way into the house through there.
—”My God… how long have you been here?” she whispered, reaching out.
The little dog hesitated for a moment, then gently touched her fingers with his nose.
Benedek laughed happily and tried to get out of the crib. It was clear that he and the puppy had already become friends.
Tears welled up in Eszter’s eyes. Suddenly, everything was clear:
That’s why Benedek wasn’t sleeping.
That’s why he was restless at night.
That’s why he was tired in the morning.
It wasn’t illness or nightmares. It was simply that a stray puppy came into his room every night to play and sleep beside him.
