That morning, Lucía, as usual, was walking hand-in-hand with her six-year-old daughter, Sofía, taking her to school.
Sofía was a lively, charming, and incredibly intelligent girl; all her classmates adored her. But that day, as they crossed the school gates, Lucía felt something strange.
In the middle of the playground, another girl was walking hand-in-hand with her mother, chatting happily. What left Lucía speechless was that this girl was identical to Sofía: the same shoulder-length hair, the same large, round eyes, and even the dimple at the corner of her lips. From a distance, she looked like a reflection in a mirror.
Sofía’s eyes widened in surprise. She let go of her mother’s hand and ran forward:
„Mom, look! Why is there another me?”
The two girls looked at each other, surprised, and then burst into laughter. As if they had known each other forever, they immediately held hands, laughing and asking each other a thousand questions.
Lucía and the other woman, Carolina, stood face to face, confused and disoriented.
The teacher couldn’t help but smile:
„If you told me you were twins, I’d believe it without hesitation.”
The playground filled with the children’s chatter, but a disquiet crept into Lucía’s heart, staying with her all day.
That night, during dinner, Sofía excitedly recounted that she had met „another girl just like me.”
Lucía smiled weakly, though the image from that morning still lingered in her mind.
A daring thought crossed her mind: what if there had been a mistake in the past?
Days later, Lucía and Carolina met again after school.
The conversation progressed slowly, until Lucía couldn’t hold back any longer:
„Have you ever thought about getting the girls’ DNA tested?”
Carolina was surprised, and for a moment a flicker of doubt crossed her eyes.
Finally, they decided to take the girls to the lab, „just to be safe.”
When the results came back, they both held their breath.
The report read:
„Sofía and Ana’s genetic profiles are identical: 99.9% match.”
It wasn’t just a resemblance: they were twins.
Carolina spoke, trembling, her voice uncertain:
„It’s impossible! I only had one daughter; the doctor handed her to me…”

Lucía was also in shock. Six years earlier, she had had a complicated cesarean section at a hospital in Guadalajara. She had barely seen the baby before losing consciousness, and when she woke up, the nurse had brought Sofía to her. How could there be another girl?
For the next few days, Lucía couldn’t sleep. She reviewed the medical records several times, contacted the former doctor, and spoke with the nurses she knew. Little by little, the truth emerged: there had been several simultaneous births that day; the ward was overcrowded and chaotic. Was it possible the newborns had been mixed up?
Meanwhile, Sofía and Ana had become inseparable. They shared the same class, walked to and from work together, as if bound by blood. The teachers commented:
„They think alike, do their homework together, and play as if they were one.”
One day, Carolina sighed as she took her daughter home:
„If the hospital really made a mistake… what will we do? Who is the real mother?”
The question took Lucía’s breath away. What if the girl she had raised with so much love for six years wasn’t her biological daughter?
But looking into Sofía’s eyes, she told herself: whatever the truth is, she will always be my daughter.
Lucía and Carolina decided to return to the hospital where they had given birth.
After lengthy requests, they finally obtained the original documents. Therein lay the key: twin girls had been born that day. The mother was in critical condition, and one of the babies was immediately taken to an incubator. The records were confusing and incomplete.
A retired nurse, reviewing the documents, put her hand to her mouth and confessed:
„That day there was a mix-up… one of the babies was given to the wrong mother.”
The two women were stunned. Finally, the truth: Sofía and Ana were twins, separated by mistake at birth.
The news brought pain, but also relief: they finally understood why the girls were so identical. Fate had been cruel, but now they had the chance to rectify it.
Lucía returned home and, looking at her sleeping daughter, feared losing her. But the next day, seeing Sofía and Ana laughing together, she understood something: love isn’t divided, it’s shared.
After reaching an agreement, both families decided to raise the girls together, like true sisters. There would no longer be „my girl” or „your girl”: only „our girls.”
From then on, Sofia spent weekends at Ana’s house, and Ana at Sofia’s.
The families became one. The wounds slowly healed, replaced by the joy of watching the girls grow up in an environment filled with love.
