The Mysterious Strawberry House: An Abandoned Jewel in Sofia

The house was built in the late 1920s for the banker Dimitar Ivanov and his wife Nadezhda Stankovic.

Inside the house, the magnificent red marble fireplace in the reception hall immediately catches everyone’s attention.

The rooms are spacious and have a stage for musicians, while elegant crystal glasses on the interior doors create a special atmosphere.

There are several bedrooms, beautiful terraces, a large study and various utility rooms, all furnished in the style and comfort of the time.

Although the original furniture has not been preserved, it is known that the high-ranking citizens of Sofia of the time preferred furniture from Central and Western Europe, which gave the house a touch of elegance.

The exterior of the property is striking with a large front garden, separated from the sidewalk by an ornate wrought-iron fence.

A triple staircase leads to the entrance of the house, while on both sides of the yard there are special portals for carriages and carts.

One can vividly imagine a carriage with members of the invited family passing through one of the portals into the courtyard of the house,

while the horseshoes clank in the back of the house, created especially for this purpose, waiting for the end of the reception.

The Ivanov banker family lived happily in this magnificent house for a long time, at least until 1944.

After the war, the property was nationalized and initially served as the Romanian embassy.

Later in the same year, it became the trade representation of the USSR in Bulgaria and served as the headquarters of various communist structures, the purposes of which often remained unclear.

In the 1990s, the house was returned to the heir of the first owner, Dimitar Ivanov.

Since 2004, the property has belonged to the director of Lukoil Valentin Zlatev, who has so far shown no interest in this cultural heritage.

Today, after decades of decay, the beautiful house radiates a sad melancholy that recalls the glorious times it once lived.
