It was a quiet Sunday morning, just another day.
Sunlight timidly filtered through the blinds, and the delicious aroma of freshly brewed coffee wafted into the apartment.
María, with a crumpled newspaper in front of her, calmly enjoyed her orange juice.
Sofía, her six-year-old daughter, walked slowly across the floor, which creaked beneath her tiny feet.
She was still wearing her pajamas, her hair disheveled, and she was yawning with her eyes half-closed.
Víctor, the „new dad,” as Sofía called him, was in the kitchen making coffee.
Everything seemed normal, serene, almost routine. Until…
„Mom, don’t drink from that glass!” Sofía suddenly shouted, her voice high-pitched, as if she had just woken up from a nightmare.
María froze.
The glass, filled to the brim with orange juice, hovered near her lips.
„The new dad put something inside!” Sofia continued, trembling.
A chill ran down Maria’s spine.
She couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
She looked at the glass, then at Sofia, unable to move.

Instinctively, she placed the glass on the table and, with a slow, almost theatrical movement, pushed it toward Victor.
Then he picked up his own glass, untouched.
At that moment, Victor entered the room with a steaming cup of coffee.
Seeing what Maria had done, his expression suddenly changed.
Something dark and cold flashed in his eyes.
Maria and Sofia immediately sensed the strange atmosphere.
Victor tried to smile, but his smile was tense and forced.
„What’s wrong?” he asked, placing the cup on the table.
Maria remained silent.
She looked at the glass in front of Victor, then looked at Sofia.
„Drink from that glass, Victor,” she said in a calm but firm voice.
Victor remained motionless for a moment.
Then he let out a short laugh.
„What nonsense is this? It’s your juice, darling!”
„Then there shouldn’t be a problem if you drink it,” Maria retorted, her gaze cold.
Victor glared at her and then looked at Sofia.
Suddenly, with a sharp movement, he knocked the glass over and knocked it to the floor.
The juice spilled out in a sticky puddle.
Maria jumped up.
„Get out of my house,” she said, her voice shaking with rage.
Victor wanted to reply, but she pointed at the door.
His face tense, Victor slammed the door behind him.
When silence returned, Maria knelt beside Sofia and hugged her tightly.
„How did you know?” —she whispered.
Sofia lowered her gaze, almost embarrassed.
—I saw him this morning… he poured something from a small bottle into the glass.
He thought I was asleep.
Maria paled.
Later, with the police in the living room and the small bottle found among Victor’s things, the truth came out:
Victor wanted to stun Maria to steal the savings she had set aside for the new house.
Then Maria realized that Sofia had not only saved her life… but also her future.
And, for the first time in a long time, she realized she didn’t need a „new dad” to be happy.
Just her and her daughter were enough. And that was all that mattered.
