The short story, or novella (from the Italian novella—news), is the main genre of short narrative prose. The author of short stories is called a novelist, and the collection of stories is called a novelistic collection.
The short story is a form of artistic prose shorter in length than the novel or the novella. The novella—a short story characterized by its narrative style—should not be confused with its English counterpart, the novella, which is equivalent to the modern concept of the long novel or extended novella.
The short story has its roots in folkloric genres of oral storytelling, such as tales or parables and fables with a moral. Compared to longer narrative forms, stories have few characters and a single plot line (rarely several), with the characteristic presence of a central problem

Stories by the same author are usually organized in cycles. In the traditional model of the „writer-reader” relationship, the short story is usually published in a periodical; the works accumulated over a period are then published in a separate book as a collection of short stories.
The typical structure of a classic novel is: introduction, climax, and conclusion. But this is only the classic version.
Even the Romantics of the early 19th century valued the unexpected „falcon-like” twist (called the „point”) in the short novel, which in Aristotle’s poetics corresponds to the moment of recognition or peripeteia.
