Just as my wife’s water broke, I received a call I’ll never forget. It was my mother’s nurse. She told me, in a trembling voice, that my mother was dying.
I felt like the world was splitting in two. I had to make an impossible decision.
I fondly remember the day Debra found out she was pregnant. It was one of those moments that are etched in our souls forever. We cried with joy, in disbelief, imagining the baby we would soon have at home. I promised her I would be the best father in the world.
We had waited so long for this miracle. After years of failed treatments and discouraging diagnoses, when there was no hope left, the unthinkable happened: Debra became pregnant.
„We will be the best parents to our baby, love,” I told her one night, as I caressed her belly. „I can’t wait to hold him in my arms.”
„I know, darling,” she replied with a warm smile.
During the pregnancy, Debra was very anxious about complications, but I always reassured her: “I’ll be with you, no matter what.”
What I never imagined was that life would put me between a rock and a hard place right at the moment of delivery…
That day began like any other, even beautiful. The sun was shining, and it seemed like everything would be fine. I was making breakfast because Debra wasn’t feeling well. When I went up to the room, I found her standing, leaning against the wall, breathing heavily, one hand on her belly.
“Are you okay?” I asked, alarmed.
“Gordon… my water broke,” she whispered. Only then did I notice the puddle under her feet.
I ran to get the keys, packed the car, went back to find her, and helped her get in.
“Calm down, love. Let’s go to the hospital. Everything will be okay.” I tried to calm her down as the contractions intensified.
Just as we were settling into the car, my phone rang. It was Marla, my mother’s nurse.
„Mom had a heart attack,” she said in a hushed voice. „I took her to the hospital… the doctors don’t think she’ll survive. Gordon, you should come here as soon as possible.”
I froze. How could everything happen at once?
Heartbroken, I told Debra. She looked at me compassionately, despite the pain I was feeling.
„Call a taxi,” she said. „I’ll go alone.”
„No, that’s not possible,” I replied, anguished.
„Gordon, your mother needs you. You were first a son, then a husband. I’ll be fine. Go with her…”
Despite her suffering, I was thinking first of myself, of my mother. I called the taxi immediately and prayed it would arrive on time. I asked the driver to take care of her, to take her safely.
With my hands shaking and my heart broken, I drove to the hospital where my mother was. Marla greeted me with her eyes lowered.
“The doctors are with her… but there’s no good news.”
I sat waiting with my heart in my throat, whispering to myself, “You’re going to be okay, Mom. You’ll soon meet your granddaughter.”
But minutes later, the doctors came out with dull faces.
“We’re so sorry… we couldn’t save her.”
My mother left that morning. The pain was unbearable. Marla tried to comfort me, but I couldn’t stop crying.
Then, the phone rang.
“Honey…” Debra said, her voice cracking but full of emotion. “It’s a baby girl. She’s beautiful. You’re a dad now.”
I didn’t know whether to laugh or cry. “That’s beautiful news,” I told her. And then, my heart breaking, I added,
“Mom died.”
“She’s not dead, Gordon,” Debra replied sweetly. “She’s with us.”
I didn’t understand what she meant… until my phone vibrated again.

It was a picture of our daughter.
I burst into tears. Our little girl was the exact reflection of my mother.
“Doesn’t she look just like her?” Debra asked.
With tears filling my eyes, I whispered, “Yes, she is the same.”
What does this story teach us?
Sometimes life takes something away from us to give us something else. On the same day Gordon lost his mother, he welcomed his daughter, who looked so much like her that it was like a sign: his mother wasn’t completely gone.
And we also learn that only a mother’s heart is capable of stepping aside, even in her worst moment, so that another mother’s heart doesn’t go out in solitude.
Debra, her soul and body in pain, decided that Gordon should be with his mother in her final moments.
