Shirley’s life fell apart in an instant when she caught her husband, Brody, flirting with another woman at work.
Her heart froze in her chest, and her hands began shaking so violently she dropped the spoons she was holding. Brody and his secretary, Lila, didn’t even seem to notice her presence.
„Brody, what’s going on?” she asked, her voice cutting like a knife in the silence of the office.
Brody turned to her with an air of apparent innocence. „What is it, Shirley? We were just talking about work.”
„Talking about work?” she retorted, her words laced with anger. „By putting your hands up her skirt? In front of everyone?”
„Don’t make a scene,” she warned, but Shirley wasn’t about to give in.
„We need to talk. In private. Now!” he ordered, a determination trembling in his voice.
Brody suddenly exploded. “You won’t order me around! I’m signing the divorce papers today. I’m taking the house away.”
“You can’t take my house away! It belongs to my parents. You have no right!” Shirley shouted, as he smiled mockingly.
“Don’t forget, you’re a lawyer’s wife. Watch and learn. I’ll bring Lila in, and we’ll celebrate everywhere—on every piece of furniture, in every room.”
Shirley froze as Brody sank his ring into the cake she’d brought. “Maybe you’ll sell it as a dog house,” he said, before walking away, holding Lila’s hand.
Surrounded by whispers of sympathy, Shirley felt her world collapse. That evening, alone in a cheap hotel room, she couldn’t hold back the tears.
She wondered how the man she’d longed to spend her life with could become so alien. Was it her fault? Why had Brody left with Lila?
In a rage, she was hitting her pillow to release the pain when a knock on the door made her jump. She thought it was the hotel staff, but when she opened it, she found an unfamiliar man standing before her.
„I heard… I thought I heard a cry for help,” she stammered.
„You’re wrong. Unless you can save my house from a husband who’s divorcing me—then you can go,” Shirley growled, her voice shaking with emotion.
The man raised his eyebrows, surprised by her firmness. He looked her up and down and replied, „I can’t help you. But now I understand why she wants to divorce you.” Then he walked away.
Furious, she followed him to his room. „What did you say?” She blocked the door before he could close it.
„I was worried about the noise,” she tried to explain.
“I know exactly what you meant!” she replied. “I’m not perfect, but that doesn’t give you the right to judge me.”
The man nodded slightly, a twinge of remorse. “You’re right. You didn’t deserve it.”
Shirley was momentarily taken aback, her anger beginning to melt away at his words. Before she could respond, the man retreated and closed the door with a confidence that left no room for further discussion.
“Wait! I’m still talking to you!” she shouted, hitting the door and slightly injuring her foot.
The next day, she went to work, still thinking about the stranger. Suddenly, she remembered: “Mr. Williams is coming today!”
“Perfect, just what I needed—a new boss when my life is already a mess,” she murmured, sitting down at her desk.
“Well, your new boss is already here,” said a familiar voice behind her. “You must be my efficient and kind secretary, Shirley.”
Shirley froze. Slowly, she turned and saw the stranger from the hotel: it was Nathan Williams, her new boss!
“Sorry about last night,” she began, but Nathan wasn’t interested in an apology.
“Your behavior was unacceptable. I expect more from my colleagues,” he said, interrupting her. “I need the files from the Richardson vs. Richardson case. Now.” And he headed for his office.
Shirley embarrassedly accepted her complaint and began searching for the files in the chaos of documents. In her haste, she knocked over some folders, once again drawing Nathan’s critical gaze.
“What’s taking so long? I asked you to bring them to me, not scatter them on the floor,” she said dryly.

“I… have them here,” she replied, handing him the folders, her face flushed with shame.
Nathan took the documents, his eyes swiping over the mess that had once been a tidy corner of the office.
“Pretty messy. It seems like order isn’t your strong suit,” she observed.
Before she could reply, he left, leaving Shirley alone with the chaos. But her problems had just begun.
Soon Brody and Lila arrived, their loud laughter amplifying Shirley’s humiliation. It was the moment she couldn’t take it anymore. She ran to Nathan’s office and declared, “I’m no longer your secretary. I’m resigning.”
Nathan, impassive, refused to accept her resignation. “Go back to work on the Richardson case, Shirley.”
“No. I’m leaving now. Sign my resignation,” she said.
Shirley persisted.
“I won’t sign them,” Nathan replied, folding the letter and throwing it out the window.
Frustrated, she sat down at her desk and wrote another letter, filled with pain and a sense of injustice. “I can’t take it anymore. Why do men think they can control my life?”
Nathan softened as he listened. “I’m not rejecting your resignation to torment you,” he said, sitting down next to her.
Shirley let her tears flow, and Nathan gently wiped her face with a handkerchief. “I can’t let you go, because I like you, Shirley,” he confessed.
“But you don’t even know me, Nathan,” she replied, confused.
“Call me Nathan. I may not know you completely, but I admire your spirit and strength,” she said, trying to build a bridge between them.
Their bond grew over time, and Shirley felt an ever-stronger attraction to Nathan. Despite her broken heart, she was beginning to open up to new feelings.
One evening, Nathan visited her hotel room to ask for help with topics for a speech. „I need your help to better express my feelings,” he admitted.
Shirley felt used, but she accepted, hiding her emotions. Working together, a casual touch sparked a moment of intimacy.
„Chocolate,” he whispered, noticing a stain on her lips, and Shirley’s heart raced.
„You came for the speech, right?” he asked, trying to remain calm.
„No, Shirley. I came for you,” Nathan confessed. „I can’t stop thinking about you, despite everything.”
His defenses crumbled. Suddenly, there was a knock on the door: it was Brody, drunk and seeking attention.
„Don’t touch me!” Shirley hissed, pushing him away. Nathan intervened immediately.
„What’s going on here?” he asked.
Brody pulled away, and Nathan stepped between them. „Let her go!”
„This is my heart,” Brody said. „We’ve been together for a long time, and she still loves me.”
„That’s not true!” Shirley protested.
Nathan held her hand. „I won’t let her hurt you.”
Finally, Shirley realized that her true love was Nathan. Their kiss marked the beginning of something new and passionate.
Nathan promised Brody wouldn’t go unpunished, and Shirley felt for the first time that life could be better after all the pain she’d endured.
