Elena had grown up in a humble family on the outskirts of Lisbon. Her parents had died when she was very young, so she was raised by her grandmother. After finishing her primary education, she dropped out of school and followed a neighbor to the city to work in a factory. Her life consisted of endless twelve-hour shifts, cold canned meals, damp rented rooms, and a few worn-out clothes.
At twenty-two, Elena met Mr. Hugo through an arrangement between their families. He was almost forty years her senior, a widower, with a son who supposedly lived abroad. Rumor had it that, despite his age, he was wealthy: he owned several properties, and if Elena agreed to marry him, he would cover her grandmother’s medical expenses, pay off her debts, and even buy her the motorcycle she had always dreamed of.
Elena hesitated.
Hugo’s hair was almost white, his skin was marked by deep wrinkles, and his body seemed frail, but his voice was firm and calm. Upon meeting, he asked her directly:
“Are you afraid of marrying an older man?”
Elena didn’t know what to say; she could only manage a shy smile.
Their wedding was simple and discreet, with a few tables set with food and some family members. She didn’t invite any friends; she felt too embarrassed.
On their wedding night, Elena sat on the bed trembling, overwhelmed by fear: fear that he would touch her, fear of the smell of ointment and of old age. When Mr. Hugo came in and turned off the light, she pretended to be asleep, clutching the blanket to her neck, her heart racing, praying that he wouldn’t come near her.
Then she heard him sigh, the soft creak of the bed as he settled down beside her. And then something unexpected happened.
Her heart raced; she thought the nightmare was beginning. But instead of coming closer, Hugo reached for a thick envelope with trembling hands.
“I… Elena,” he whispered weakly, “I don’t want to hurt you. I just need to tell you the truth before it’s too late.”
Confused, Elena sat up. He opened the envelope and showed her several documents: a marriage contract, property deeds, and a letter from her son, the one she believed lived abroad. The letter warned that Hugo was being manipulated by a group of con artists seeking to steal his fortune and urged Elena to “beware of those who seem kind but are hiding deceit.”
Tears streamed down Hugo’s face.
“I was afraid of losing you… and of being destroyed,” he said softly. “I was afraid that if I told you the truth, you would leave. But I can’t let you become their next victim.”
Elena felt a shift within her. The man she had feared was, in fact, the one who wanted to protect her. All the tension and anxiety vanished. That night, instead of fear, they talked until dawn about their pasts, their regrets, and their dreams. Elena realized that not all older, wealthy men were cruel. Behind Hugo’s wrinkles and frailty was a kind heart.
The next morning, Elena decided to stay, on one condition: to live honestly, without secrets.
Then an unexpected turn of events occurred. As Hugo left the room, his phone vibrated with a new message from his son:
„If you look closely, you’ll see that the real danger isn’t outside… it’s beside you.”
Elena froze. What did that mean? Who was „beside her”?
She began to investigate quietly. While Hugo worked, she reviewed old letters and invoices, exploring suspicious financial transactions. One night she found a USB drive hidden behind a stack of books. Inside were security videos: recordings of unknown people entering the house and leaving threatening signs.

Looking around, she suddenly recognized one of the intruders: Víctor, Hugo’s old friend and former business partner, who used to visit them frequently. He was the one orchestrating the threats, trying to seize Hugo’s properties.
Elena presented the evidence to the police. Together with Hugo, they set a trap and caught Víctor red-handed. The immediate danger vanished, and for the first time, Elena could breathe easy.
But just when they thought it was all over, a letter arrived with no return address:
„The game isn’t over. Someone else is watching you.”
Elena and Hugo exchanged a knowing glance. They were no longer afraid. Whatever happened, they would face it together.
Weeks later, peace seemed to have returned. But one night, while Elena was having coffee in the living room, she saw a dark shadow outside the window.
Checking the security cameras, she discovered that the same figure entered the house every night… but its feet never touched the ground.
A security expert analyzed the recordings and revealed something shocking: the videos had been manipulated for months.
Then came the final revelation: the mastermind behind it all was Daniel, Hugo’s son. He had orchestrated the entire situation to test who was truly worthy of the position.
Her father’s tuna. In the end, he chose Elena.
When the truth came out, the family decided to rebuild their lives with honesty and transparency. But just when everything seemed calm, Elena found another envelope under the old oak tree:
„This is only the beginning. Are you ready for the next game?”
Elena smiled weakly. Whatever the future held, she was no longer afraid. Now, she and Hugo would face any challenge… together.
