This is my last happy photo because, just a few hours later, I canceled a family vacation my son paid for after his sudden ultimatum.

My son decided to take a trip with his family. He invited me to join him and told me he had paid all my expenses. I, Ludmila, was touched by his generosity and happily packed my bags. But already during the vacation, amid laughter and happy moments, everything suddenly changed.

Suddenly, my son Grigorij issued me an ultimatum that struck a chord with me. What began as a friendly gesture quickly turned into an emotional confrontation, where it became difficult to reconcile gratitude with his unexpected demands.

The rays of sunlight streamed through the curtains of my cozy home as I sipped my coffee. This stillness contrasted sharply with the days when my grandchildren, Bogdan and Lova, filled the house with laughter and life.

Babysitting them a couple of times a week was a joy, albeit exhausting. But today I was alone, and I especially appreciated this rare peace.

My phone vibrated on the table, breaking the silence. A photo of Grigory, his wife Alisa, and their two children appeared on the screen.

„Hi, Mom,” his familiar, warm voice sounded.

„Grisha, what happened?” I asked, already worried that he needed help with childcare. But his suggestion surprised me.

„We’re planning a family trip from December 15th to 22nd, and we want you to come with us.” „I’m responsible for everything,” he said enthusiastically.

I was amazed, both by his generosity and by the surprise.

„That sounds wonderful, Grisha. Where are you going?”

„It’s a surprise. But it’s a place you’ve always dreamed of visiting. Don’t worry about the money: it’s my gift to you.”

Expectation warred with reason.

„Grisha, that’s very kind, but you know I can’t accept such an expensive gift just like that. And I’m really not in the right position to travel: costs, health…”

He insisted. He explained how important it was to him that this be a true family trip. That everyone—me, Alisa, and the kids—be together. After many conversations in which I expressed my concerns about the destination’s suitability for young children, he reassured me:

„Mom, we’ve thought of everything. We want to spend time together as a family. And don’t worry: everything’s already paid for.”

I agreed, but on one condition: I’m on vacation too.

„Grisha, if I go with you, it’ll be a vacation for me too. I want to be able to relax, like you and Alisa.”

„Of course, Mom, no problem,” he replied confidently.

The closer we got to departure, the more nervous I became. The only thing that puzzled me was why we were traveling with young children to a city that is more known for its romantic evenings than for its children’s activities. But since the decision had already been made, I didn’t protest.

The first four days flew by between the trip and settling into a luxury hotel. The city was even better than I imagined: culture, history, and incredible food.

The agreement with Grigorij held: during the day, I participated in family outings and enjoyed every moment with the grandchildren. At night, I rested as I wished.

But on the fourth day, the balance was shattered. After a long day out, I returned to the room, ready for dinner at a restaurant I’d been wanting to visit for a while: a cozy place with local food and a good glass of wine.

Then the phone rang.

„Mom, are you busy tonight?” Grigorij asked a little hesitantly.

„I was thinking about going out to eat,” I replied, already feeling a premonition of what was to come.

„Can you be with the kids? Alisa and I want to go somewhere where kids aren’t allowed…”

I froze. This was exactly what I wanted to avoid.

„Grisha, we had an agreement. I’m here to rest too. This is important to me.”
