I took a 4-year-old daughter and a month later my wife told me, “We have to give her up.”

Why my wife wanted to give our adopted daughter back after only a month

Lucas and Élodie adopt Emily.

Lucas and Élodie had adopted Emily, a sweet, affectionate, and charming little girl. She was only four years old, but her bright smile immediately won the hearts of her new parents.

At their first meeting, Emily ran straight into Lucas’s arms, as if she had found her real father.

Long and nerve-wracking procedures

For Lucas, it was a deeply moving moment—a sign that fate had chosen him. After months of waiting, paperwork, and discussions with social workers…

The social worker asked them, „Are you really ready?”
Élodie replied with conviction, „She’s our daughter.”

The first few days were wonderful for all three of them. They played, they laughed—finally, the family seemed complete.

„I want to stay here, Dad.”

One evening, Lucas came home dead tired from work. He immediately ran to Emily, but she burst into tears, clinging to him:
„I want to stay here, Dad.”

Those words touched him deeply.
What did she mean? At that moment, Élodie entered the room, her face stiff.
„We have to give her back,” she said coldly.

He was at his wits’ end. Emily was breaking things, dirtying clothes, and once even staining Élodie’s wedding dress with paint.

He no longer saw in her the innocence of a child—but a threat to his own stability.

Lucas and Élodie had dreamed of having a family for years. But after several miscarriages and health problems, they decided to adopt.

„She’s manipulative,” Élodie added.

Lucas was shocked by those words. He had already grown hopelessly attached to Emily and couldn’t bear the thought of losing her.

„Her or me,” said Élodie.

In the end, Lucas made his decision: he would stay by his daughter’s side.
He still loved his wife, but he knew he had to do the right thing.

Élodie left the house, slamming the door.

The following days were difficult: Emily was sad and didn’t understand why her mother had disappeared. Lucas did everything he could to console her, with kindness and patience.

After a few weeks, Élodie returned, full of remorse.
She wanted to right her wrongs and admitted that she had been afraid, that she had acted impulsively.

Lucas listened to her, but the wound was deep.
„You didn’t just abandon me, Élodie. You abandoned her too,” he told her.

The road to peace.

A year had passed. Emily still flinched when someone raised their voice, as Élodie did. She squeezed Lucas’s hand when she was afraid.

„You’ll never leave me alone, will you?”
But now she laughed more often and could sleep without crying.

Calling him „Dad” had become second nature. That evening, hugging him tightly, she whispered:

„You’ll never leave me alone, will you?”
Lucas held her even tighter and replied:
„Never.”
