Recently, while rummaging through my grandmother’s old things, I accidentally found a small, unmarked box hidden at the back of the closet. It was covered in dust, a clear sign that no one had opened it in many years. Inside were strange objects: thin, shiny, and fragile glass rods. At first glance, they looked like simple cocktail garnishes or fragments of old Christmas decorations, but as I picked them up, I realized they weren’t plastic, but delicate, real glass. They shone with a soft light, and each one had a tiny, almost invisible hook.
For a long time, I didn’t know what they were for. When I told my grandfather’s brother about my find, he laughed and explained that they were mini vases for boutonnieres, the flowers men used to wear in their buttonholes. I thought it was incredible, but it was true: they placed these tiny containers in their lapels, added a drop of water, and added a live flower, which stayed fresh and fragrant throughout the evening.
At that time, flowers had a special value. They weren’t chosen at random, because each one conveyed a different message. The white carnation symbolized purity and nobility, the rose represented feelings, and the orchid highlighted the uniqueness of the moment.
The lapel flower wasn’t just an accessory: it was a gesture of attention, a symbol, a silent letter. And that small glass vase added a touch of elegance and delicacy to that meaningful detail.

Today, life happens differently. We live in a hurry, seeking comfort and simplicity: jeans, T-shirts, work, meetings. However, this discovery reminded me that it’s the small details that give life a special meaning. True elegance isn’t found in luxury or grand gestures, but in the ability to appreciate beauty and share it.
Those glass vases have fallen out of fashion, but their spirit still lives on. They evoke a time when feelings were expressed with simple but sincere gestures. Now I keep them on a shelf like small relics of the past. Sometimes I look at them and think about how essential it is to never lose the ability to find poetry in everyday life.
You don’t need a special occasion to give a flower. Simply put a sprig in a glass of water, decorate the table with a small bouquet, or give a flower to someone you love for no reason at all. These are simple, yet warm gestures that create a special atmosphere and brighten ordinary days.
Every time I look at those tiny vases, I realize that true elegance doesn’t depend on fashion or wealth. It’s the desire to share light, tenderness, and beauty even in the simplest moments. It’s these small gestures that remind us of what truly matters: caring for others, love for life, and the poetry hidden in the little things.
