„Why don’t you say hello?” the lieutenant colonel shouted to the young woman, even though he didn’t know who she really was.
That day, an unusual silence reigned in the military unit. The parade ground was shrouded in morning fog, and the soldiers stood in orderly rows, motionless, staring into space.
They knew their commander would arrive soon, a man whose presence instilled respect and often even fear.
The lieutenant colonel was known for his severity. Not so much for his discipline, but for his ruthlessness. He could humiliate his subordinates with a single look, and his outbursts of anger were unpredictable and violent.
A few minutes later, the roar of an engine could be heard in the distance. A heavy military SUV entered the base, raising clouds of dust that slowly fell onto the gravel of the square.
The lieutenant colonel looked out the window and immediately felt satisfied: his power was evident, his authority unquestionable.
„Everyone, stand at attention!” the unit commander shouted, and the soldiers obeyed immediately, raising their arms in salute.
But at that moment, something caught his attention. Across the square, with a calm and confident step, walked a young woman in military uniform. She wasn’t in a hurry, holding her helmet in her hands and not once looking at the lieutenant colonel.
He immediately felt a shiver of anger. It was a challenge he couldn’t ignore. He put on the handbrake, opened the window, and shouted:
„Hey, soldier! Why don’t you salute me? Are you crazy?! Do you know who I am?!”
The girl looked him straight in the eyes. Her gaze was calm, her voice firm, without a trace of fear:

„Yes, I know who you are.”
These words infuriated the lieutenant colonel. He jumped out of the car, shouting and gesticulating. Insults flew one after another, and his face was red with rage. The soldiers held their breath. No one dared to take the girl’s side.
However, the young woman didn’t back down. She stopped a few steps away from him, still calm. Her voice, cold and controlled, cut through the air:
„I have no obligation to salute those beneath me.”
„What did you say?!” the lieutenant colonel was stunned. „Have you seen my insignia? I’m a lieutenant colonel!”
The girl stepped forward, straight, as if nothing could scare her.
„I’m a colonel in charge of internal investigations. I came here on orders from the Ministry of Defense to check on how you treat your soldiers. Too many complaints have come in—they all say the same thing: abuse of subordinates.”
The lieutenant colonel blanched. He stopped, without saying a word. Never before had he felt so vulnerable. The girl crossed her arms and added with a cold smile:
„Why are we watching without saluting? Another violation on your part.”
A deathly silence fell over the square. The wind stirred the leaves of the distant trees, but no one dared even sneeze. Every soldier looked on in disbelief.
The lieutenant colonel, usually confident and commanding, now stood still, confused, unsure of what to do for the first time in his life.
The girl, calm and composed, approached again, still holding her helmet in her hands. Her presence was a challenge no one dared face, and her gaze spoke louder than words: authority comes not from shouting or posture, but from courage and justice.
For the first time, the lieutenant colonel felt that the power he had always considered unshakeable could be challenged by an ordinary, yet fearless, woman.
